Copeland
Cope didnât have a lot of free time to think about Judeâs dramatic escape. He needed to finish feeding the baby and then had to clean him up. Of course Wolf had spit up all over himself and Cope. He couldnât help noticing Running Eagle was snapping photographs.
He had a million questions of his own, none of which had to do with the conversation theyâd just had. âWill you teach me the song you were singing to Wolf earlier?â
Running Eagle seemed stunned by the question. âI will.â He took a seat at the table across from Cope and the baby. âYou knew the child was coming.â
Cope nodded. âDo you want to hear the story? It has to do with my gifts.â
âWhat gifts do you possess?â All of Eagleâs attention was firmly on Cope.
âI have several. I can speak with spirits who have passed on. I have the gift of sight, and I am a sixth-generation legacyâ¦â There was no way Cope was going to say the word âwitchâ in Running Eagleâs house.
âYou cast spells.â Eagle was grinning at him from across the table.
âYeah, my mother taught me from a very young age. Iâm familiar with not only white spells but with darker ones as well.â Cope wasnât sure how Running Eagle would feel about his familiarity with the dark side of magick.
âThe Navajo are a people of balance, Copeland. There cannot be good without evil, nor white without black. We understand each has a place in our world.â
It was a tale as old as time. The old stories of the Bible all had to do with good facing evil and triumphing in the end. So many of the worldâs religions and cultures had this in common. âJude and I were working a case at an old house in Salem Massachusetts. One of the men who presided over the trials lived there. The house is now a museum and the curator came to me after a strange encounter with what he thought was the spirit of this deceased judge.â
âYou would have been burned too.â Eagle seemed stunned by his own words. Stunned and a bit upset by his pronouncement.
Cope had never really thought about it that way before. He most definitely would have been burned for being a witch. âMy spell work would have been the second strike against me. People of that time would have put me to death simply because of who I loved.â
âMother Earth creates all beings. Jude was created the way he was for a purpose. As were you. I did not understand Judeâs preference for men, but I also knew it was not my place to change him in any way. It is easy to see now, in hindsight, how things were meant to be.â
It was as close to a ringing endorsement as Cope knew he was going to get. âDuring the course of the investigation, there were several spirits who needed to be crossed over. It was then that Judeâs father stepped forward.â
Running Eagleâs eyes widened.
